Former Oriole Kyle Stowers blasts three homers as Marlins rout O's

July 13 - Kyle Stowers hit three home runs in a five-hit, six-RBI performance against his former team as the Miami Marlins blew past the host Baltimore Orioles 11-1 in the teams' final game before the All-Star break Sunday afternoon. Stowers had talked earlier in the series about his close ties to the Orioles, who drafted him and groomed him as he rose through the minor leagues. In the series finale, he provided his power production across the first five innings, racking up three homers and five runs batted in. The three homers tied a Marlins' franchise single-game record, and he ended the day 5-for-5 with four runs scored. Otto Lopez also homered for the Marlins, who have won two games in a row and finished a 4-3 road trip that included an early stop in Cincinnati. Liam Hicks posted three hits, Agustin Ramirez added two safeties and scored three times and Jesus Sanchez and Lopez also contributed a pair of hits. Eury Perez (3-2) pitched seven shutout innings for the victory, winning a decision for the third time in three starts this month. He gave up three hits without a walk and struck out six. Brandon Young (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs, including four homers, in 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with nine hits while striking out four. Ramon Laureano had a home run in the eighth inning off Calvin Faucher and added a double for Baltimore, which went 3-3 on the homestand. Stowers homered in the second inning for the game's first run. His two-run shot in the third pushed the score to 5-0. Lopez made it back-to-back homers by belting his 11th. The former Oriole's two-run blast in the fifth marked his 19th home run of the season. Stowers scored his fourth run in the seventh inning after singling in the seventh. He crossed the plate on Dane Myers' two-out single. Then in the eighth, the first-time All-Star drove in a run with a single. The game began following a 95-minute rain delay. --Field Level Media

Marlins Outfielder Kyle Stowers Hits Three Homers Against Orioles

Miami Marlins left fielder Kyle Stowers has hit a career-high three home runs in Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old is the fourth player in Marlins history with a three-homer game and the first since Brian Anderson did it on Sept. 18, 2020, in the second game of a doubleheader against Washington. Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) also did it. Stowers, whom Baltimore selected in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft and traded to Miami last July as part of a package to land pitcher Trevor Rogers, homered in all three plate appearances against Os starter Brandon Young. Stowers, who earned his first All-Star selection earlier this month, lofted a 1-1 pitch to right-center to lead off the second inning. The next inning he lined a first-pitch curveball to right-center to make it 4-0. After working a 2-2 count in the fifth, Stowers pulled a two-run shot over the scoreboard in right to extend the lead to 7-0. It is Stowers' fourth multi-homer game this season.

Aaron Judge becomes fastest to 350 homers, doing so in 1,088 games, bettering mark mcgwire's 1,280

Aaron Judge didn't just become the fastest player to hit 350 home runs–he did it in 192 fewer games than Mark McGwire. 'I just think he's playing in a different league,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Judge's ninth-inning drive in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Judge homered to right-center on a high 0-2 fastball from Brad Keller, a two-run shot a couple of rows into the right-center field seats. He reached 350 in his 1,088th game. McGwire hit No. 350 in his 1,280th game against Detroit's Brian Moehle on June 2, 1997, bettering Harmon Killebrew in his 1,319th game. 'Big Mac did a lot of great things in this game and he's definitely a legend,' Judge said. Judge, who turned 33 in April, debuted with the Yankees at age 24 in 2016. The two-time AL MVP also doubled twice and is hitting a major league-leading .358 with 35 homers and 81 RBIs. 'Would have been great if we got a win today,' Judge said. 'I've been surrounded by a lot of great teammates, been on some good teams, so they really put me in the best position to go out there and perform at my best.' McGwire finished in 2001 at age 38 with 583 homers, currently 11th on the career list. He admitted in 2010 he used performance-enhancing drugs and has been denied entry to baseball's Hall of Fame. The Yankees captain has spoken with McGwire. 'I think it started with when I broke my first rib,' Judge said. 'I think his son was kind of going through the same thing, so he was first asking me how did I heal? What do we do? So I kind of gave him some tips on that. And then we just kind of chit-chatted a little bit and kept in contact.'
